I'm not buying this!

Ok I love Project Runway and Tim Gunn but his advice on what you should never wear if you're over 40 is crap in my opinion! I just turned 30 and if he told me that suddenly I can't wear capri pants anymore I'd tell him where to shove it :) I say if you love wearing a certain style of clothes and feel good in them you should wear them no matter what age you are...or what Tim Gunn says!

If you're interested- here's a list of what he says you should never wear if you are over 40:
1. Horizontal stripes
2. Jackets that hit at mid-thigh
3. Pleated pants
4. Double-breasted blazers
5. Capri-length pants
6. Low-rise jeans

Is there anything on this list you would agree with?

The housing market through the eyes of a 5 year old

Today my niece started kindergarten. I can't believe it! Time is flying by way too fast! Over the weekend my sister brought the kids for a visit and you just never know what's going to come out of Emma's mouth :) She was looking around mine and my husband's apartment and said "Aunt Stephanie, I like it here. But why do you live in a hotel and not a house?" I wish it was a hotel! Housekeeping to come and pick up after my husband's mess instead of me would be really nice!

I couldn't stop laughing too when she kept saying how small it was. Asking questions like, Why is your bed so small? And your closet? And you only two bedrooms? I wonder that myself all the time when I can't find the space to put all of our unopened wedding gifts! Can't really explain the housing mess to a 5 year old and that we do own a house...just in another city and we have to rent that one out and then rent something here. Oh to be 5 years old again and oblivious to all that lol.

More birthday fun

The weekend trip ended up being like scenes from a movie- the mosquitoes of course being a horror flick.

The comedy came later...

We had a jacuzzi tub in the room so that was awesome. We didn't realize though that jetted tubs and bubble bath do not mix. So Brian pours 1/4 of the bottle of bubble bath in and when nothing happens he just keeps pouring. Then we turned the jets on and bubbles started rising and rising and rising and then overflowing EVERYWHERE! We tried to scoop them and run them into the bathroom (since the jacuzzi was out in the main area and there was a separate bathroom/tub) But there were just too many darn bubbles! After a call to housekeeping for extra towels the mess was cleaned up.

Yesterday we tried to spend a little more time on the island looking at the ponies and some souvenir shops but we had to check out of the hotel room so the car was filled with stuff...including my birthday cake, balloons and leftover picnic food items so we left the car running with the a.c. as we ran into a few more shops. Well Brian gets out at one store, keys still in the ignition, locks the car (we had a spare key) and then realizes that the car is still in drive! And moving towards the store! Whoops! Luckily it was going pretty slow and there was enough time for me to fish through my purse for the spare key and throw it to him so he could throw it in park.

It was definitely a memorable trip!

50 and counting

I had a birthday this weekend- no not 50 quite yet. I turned 30 and my husband took me to Chincateague for a long weekend to celebrate. I was looking forward to a leisure filled weekend, walking the wooded trails and gazing at wild ponies. I ended up running for my life!

Ok maybe that's a little dramatic hehe but it felt that way at the time. Brian and I got halfway through the trail when we noticed them...the bloodthirsty mosquito's and they were attacking us. We tried to outrun them but we weren't fast enough. And the bug repellent that we had sprayed on obviously had no effect on these monsters. So there we were, running for the safety of the car. They followed us in there too.

I tried counting the number of bites but gave up after I reached 54. Happy Birthday to me!

New Slickdeals posted!

I just posted a update on Stephanie's Slickdeals. I have two new sections- places where kids eat free and free samples! Check it out and let me know what slickdeals you've come across.

FREE CATS! Adopt a Cat for Free at the Virginia Beach SPCA on Saturday, August 15th

We got our little guy, Louie, from the VBSPCA 2 years ago. He was 3 years old when we got him and we can't imagine life without him as part of the family now! If you have room in your heart and home for a cat this Saturday is the day to adopt!

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Virginia Beach SPCA still has too many cats that need forever homes. In response to unusually high feline intake numbers and lower adoptions, the Virginia Beach SPCA is launching a one day only promotion to find permanent homes for cats as quickly as possible.

“Cats are coming into the shelter faster than they are being adopted, so we had to do something we haven’t done before,” said Sharon Adams, Executive Director. On Saturday, August 15th from 10am until 5pm, the VBSPCA will offer the “Free Over Three” promotion, which waives adoption fees on altered cats over three years of age. We hope that “Free Over Three” will encourage individuals who have been considering adding a new cat to their household to use the promotion as an incentive to acquire their cat now rather than later.

Potential adopters can download and print a "Free Over Three" cat coupon at The coupon must be presented at time of application and availability is on a first come, first served basis. Normal adoption criteria will still apply. Full details and restrictions are available on the coupon and on the website.

Shelters across the region are experiencing high cat numbers and with so much competition, finding loving, permanent homes for each one is difficult. This is compounded by offers of free cats on sites such as Craigslist. But adoption of a shelter cat versus a free cat elsewhere has a huge advantage. All Virginia Beach SPCA cats are spayed or neutered, dewormed, have received their rabies and FVRCP vaccinations, are tested for FELV/FIV, and are microchipped. The cost of these procedures is worth upwards of $400 that individuals would have to acquire when obtaining cats through the classifieds or Craigslist.

For additional information on the “Free Over Three” promotion, please contact Teresa Lamarche, Community Outreach Director at 427-0070 X41.

American Indoor Karting

I've been at Eagle for 3 years now and often have appearances at businesses on weekends. I have never once convinced Brian to go with me to one until last weekend when I told him I had to go to American Indoor Karting. Suddenly he was all about going to a roadshow with me...gee I wonder why?!

I expected him to race while I worked but that didn't go as planned...he wanted to race me. Now, on the highway I have a bit of a lead foot but for some reason that has never carried over to bumper cars or go karts. I don't know what it is, maybe inhaling all the exhaust turns me into a slow poke.

So out of love for my husband I put on the rental didn't even have laces (I say that's a handicap right?!)

And the head sock, helmet and neck brace...

And got ready to race...

I was doing ok for the first lap or so but Brian was nicely tagging along behind me and I knew he was probably itching to go a little faster so I waved him to pass me.

And boy did he. Before I knew it, he was out of sight and it was me alone on the track. Not so fun. So I was just puttering along until I realized he was about to lap me! I tried to speed up but he just flew by and I figured well, I might as well go back to puttering along. Then I got lapped...again!

I am now the laughing stock of American Indoor Karting. Oh well, we still had a good time :)

Not our best idea ever

Our old computer desk was sitting in the kitchen waiting for the Salvation Army to come pick it up so Brian decided to rig up Louie's favorite toy to it and let him play. Didn't go so well...for the desk at least.
